Jeremy Knippel from North Central Minnesota visiting Australia

Left: Jeremy Knippel welding leaves to a branch   Right: Jeremy with a small branch for the tree

Jeremy Knippel from North Central Minnesota was one of the first blacksmiths from the US to send us leaves (and a flowering gumnut) for the tree. He visited Australia this month and dropped in to one of our local forges to do some welding for the tree. Thanks to Dale for organising Jeremy's visit and to Doug for the use of his forge and equipment for the day.

Leaf Sorting Day Leaf Sorting Day Leaf Sorting Day

Sorting leaves into family and community groups

Today was our second leaf sorting day where a small group of volunteers came together to sort leaves into family and community groups so they can be together on the same branch. By the end of the day, over 500 leaves had been sorted through and grouped. We will hold one more sorting day to check all the grouped leaves and to prepare the leaves for the welders.

This evening was the opening night of the Annual Independent Schools Victoria Art Exhibition. Amongst the fabulous pieces of student art was displayed a copper branch forged by Rod Heron and sponsored by Independent Schools Victoria. This branch is a very special branch. On each leaf is a message written by students and teachers of Independent Schools Victoria. A lot of thought has gone into these messages, they are beautiful, heart warming words. Each message has been hand stamped into the leaves by Rod, one letter at a time. We are grateful to ISA for sponsoring this branch, putting such consideration into the messages it bears and supporting this project. This branch will stay with Independent Schools Victoria for the next few months until the tree is assembled. It will then be attached to the tree.

The messages on the leaves are:

WE ARE BY YOUR SIDE         HAVE HOPE AND FAITH         STAND TALL         THE SUN ALWAYS RISES         BUILD WE MUST         WE WILL NEVER FORGET         FROM ASHES NEW LIFE         UNITING A COMMUNITY         STAY STRONG         ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS         TREE OF LIFE         TOGETHER WE STAND         WE HAVE EACH OTHER         NEVER GIVE UP HOPE         COURAGEOUS CFA VOLUNTEERS         INSPIRED CFA SERVICE         STRENGTH IN NUMBERS         NEW GROWTH         TREASURE LIFE         TREASURE EVERY MOMENT         THANK YOU CFA         VALE DR KEN ROWE         MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU         COMMENDABLE BRAVERY         FIRE FIGHTER HEROES         FROM ASHES HOPE

Branch Forging Workshop

Branch Forging at the Barn, Coopers Settlement Branch Forging at the Barn, Coopers Settlement Branch Forging at the Barn, Coopers Settlement Branch Forging at the Barn, Coopers Settlement

The Branch Forging Workshop produced many branches and twigs for the tree. Over 20 blacksmiths attended to form a clanging, ringing production line of branch makers. We had both power hammers working most of the day and all forges fired up. Thanks to our wonderful support crew who provided lunch; Pam, Nancy, Vicky, Colleen, Sandra, Steve, Phil and Rick, who worked the BBQ. Our next step is sorting the leaves into groups and sending leaves and branches to our welders to put together.
